1. IDENTIFING THE PROBLEM :
Migrant field workers endure harsh weather conditions without adequate protection, facing extreme temperatures and heavy rain.
Providing them with suitable gear ensures their safety and well-being, neglecting their needs perpetuates inequality and jeopardizes their health and productivity.
Objective: Understand the real needs of field workers
- Conducted interviews and surveys with field workers to learn about past and current struggles
- Observed first-hand the effects of harsh weather, pesticides, and physical strain
- Noticed common issues: skin exposure, heat exhaustion, low durability of gear, and lack of affordable, lasting equipment

TARGET AUDIENCE - MIGRANT FIELD WORKERS
Migrant workers are recruited into the Department of Labor’s H-2A Temporary Agricultural Workers visa program that enables American employers to bring them to the U.S. to labor in fields nationwide, they have little control over where they will work or the kind of work they will do.
Majority of H-2A visa holders are from Mexico and work on farms in California.
Approximately 75% of California’s farmworkers are undocumented, National Labor Relations Laws (NLRA) do not apply to farmworkers.
MIGRANT FIELD WORKERS MAY BE PARTICULARLY VULNERABLE TO:
Wage theft
Unhealthy conditions
Sickness
Abuse / Threats
Deportation
Death

In 2024...
Only 5 states offer statewide heat protections for outdoor workers
California
Colorado
Minnesota
Oregon
Washington
Nation’s hottest states including: Texas, Arizona, and now Florida DO NOT.
2. Research Materials & Innovations
Approach: Find high-performance, eco-conscious materials
- Sourced breathable, UV-blocking, and water-resistant fabrics
- Tested non-toxic coatings that repel pesticides without endangering skin
- Researched antimicrobial and self-cleaning textiles to reduce maintenance
- Prioritized materials that age well with use and resist wear
Impact on Health and Productivity
By providing appropriate gear this ensures the safety and well-being of migrant field workers. Proper protection reduces the risk of weather-related illnesses, such as heat stroke and hypothermia, and prevents injuries from harsh working conditions. This not only safeguards their health but also enhances their productivity, as workers can perform their tasks more efficiently and with fewer interruptions due to health issues.
Addressing Inequality
Neglecting the needs of migrant field workers perpetuates inequality and jeopardizes their health and productivity. By equipping them with proper workwear, we acknowledge their contributions and prioritize their well-being. This garment is a step towards leveling the playing field, ensuring that all workers have the protection they need to perform their jobs safely and effectively.

3. Co-Design with Workers
User-Centered Design:
- Partnered with multi-generational farm families
- Gathered feedback on prototype fit, features, and comfort
- Added modular components (like removable sleeves or knee protection)

Key Features - Goal
1. Weather-Resistant Fabric
Weather-resistant fabric that provides excellent protection against extreme temperatures and heavy rain. This fabric is both waterproof and breathable, ensuring that workers stay dry during rainstorms and cool during hot weather
2. Temperature Regulation
To tackle extreme temperatures, the garment includes integrated temperature regulation technology. This includes:
- Thermal Insulation: Lightweight but effective insulation layers keep workers warm during cold mornings and evenings
- Cooling Mechanism: Mesh panels and moisture-wicking materials help dissipate heat and keep the wearer cool under the scorching sun
3. Ergonomic Design
The ergonomic design that ensures comfort and mobility which features:
- Adjustable Fit: Elastic and adjustable straps allow for a customized fit, accommodating various body types and sizes
- Reinforced Stress Points: Additional reinforcement at high-stress points ensures durability and longevity, even with rigorous use
4. Integrated Safety Features
Safety is paramount, so the garment includes:
- High-Visibility Elements: Reflective strips and bright colors enhance visibility, reducing the risk of accidents in low-light conditions
- Protective Padding: Built-in padding at critical areas such as knees and elbows provides extra protection during physical labor.
5. Convenient Storage Solutions
Practicality is key for field workers who need to carry tools and personal items that include:
- Multiple Pockets: Strategically placed pockets of various sizes for easy access to tools, phones, and other essentials.
- Waterproof Compartments: Special waterproof pockets to protect valuable items from rain and moisture.

PROTOTYPING

FINAL PROTOTYPE
MARIPOSAS LIBRES
"WORKWEAR FOR AMERICA'S UNSUNG HEROS"

FINAL THOUGHTS:
By equipping migrant field workers with the Mariposas Libres garment, we create safer, more dignified working conditions that reduce weather-related health risks and empower workers to perform their jobs with confidence and comfort. This initiative fosters greater equity in the agricultural industry, recognizing the essential contributions of migrant laborers and taking a tangible step toward social and environmental justice.
